Déjate Llevar (or Let Yourself Go in English), is The Marías’ second, long-awaited single. The song, which has lyrics that are completely in Spanish, was the first one that lead singer Maria Zardoya and drummer Josh Conway wrote for the band.
The Marías’ second song begins like something that belongs in Stranger Things; the synth, guitar, and drums give off a very 80’s-like vibe to the song. The drums and synthesizer are prominent in the beginning of the song, with the guitar and bass softly chiming in as the beat progresses. The funky beat accompanied by the long, drawn-out strums of the guitar give the song a more romantic feel, which is only heightened by the amorous vocals.
While the feel of an 80’s pop ballad continues throughout the entire song, Zardoya’s signature, siren-like vocals enter seamlessly and invoke a dream-like trance for listeners. The Spanish lyrics make listeners think of Latin pop artists Natalia Lafourcade and Carla Morrison, while still having a unique, indie-jazz feel. Although not everyone may be able to understand the lyrics, any listener can tell that the sultry love song is one coming from a place of longing. The bilingual nature of The Marías’ band gives concrete evidence to the universal nature of music; no matter what language a song may be in, anyone can enjoy it, for the motivation of music is the same: to create something that anyone can love and appreciate. The unique mixture of surreal instrumentals with ethereal vocals is something that ended way too abruptly. Zardoya’s angelic vocalizations put listeners into a trance, making it virtually impossible for one to go back to a life in which this song does not exist.
Déjate Llevar transports listeners away from the chaos of everyday life; Zardoya’s angelic vocals, paired with gorgeous lyrics and psychedelic instrumentals brings one to a place of complete calm and tranquility. The song may be upbeat and the instruments may make one feel like dancing, but the vocals balance the piece in a way that takes one to a place of peace and tranquility, while still preparing the listener for what is yet to come on, what I’m sure will be, an incredible and surprising EP.
While the single doesn’t officially come out until Friday, KCRW, the radio station that first discovered their inaugural single, “I Don’t Know You”, was given the opportunity to premiere the piece on their blog, as well as on The Marías’ SoundCloud. Be sure to check out their Spotify and social media platforms; their debut EP, Supercut Vol. 1, will be released in October!
