I had the pleasure of sitting down with Hitting Subset, a local Austin band before their set at Stubbs Indoors on September 24th, 2017. (Interview by Chapin Patel)
who is your favorite artist you have played with?
CB- hail the sun, pretty rad, probably my favorite
ER- sianvar
ZB- red jumpsuit apparatus, 500 cap sold out.
AB: Eyes set to kill. We played with them in Houston, and their performance blew me away.
what is your favorite song to play live & why?
CB- mercury, because it’s about Freddie Mercury, it’s a good song for me because it deals with his life at the end where he was diagnosed with AIDS and only had a few months to live, it was fun to do research on
ZL: Shrink, how people react to it is nice to see
ER: timegarden, playing it live with Taylor is fun, the first time we ever had two guitars live.
AB: close call between our title tracks, hikari & Yami, I feel like the drum parts in those are the most innovative.
what does the song sunday mean to you?
CB: Sunday’s about my relationship with my dad how he used to be a musician. Just the idea that we could have shared a lot of memories and music together and he was afraid of the direction I would go. He thought i would go down the drugs path.
ZL: hanging out with your friends on Sunday’s
AB: to question everything, go against the grain & be yourself.
how long have you been a band?
5 years.
is there anything you do to help you prepare for a show?
ER: I like to catch up on sleep and try to peak my energy. I like to relax. I also stretch my fingers
ZL: I have certain vocal warmups I do.
CB: personally I like to warmup five or ten minutes before, nothing really special.
AU: the day of ill usually do a light practice, maybe run through a couple songs. Then 15-30 minutes before we play I’ll stretch and warm up with my practice pad.
What does the band name mean?
AU: To reach your goals!
What is your process like?
AU: Emilio brings songs to the table, and I’ll usually write the drums to that first. Then Zane and Caleb will write to that. In the future we’re going to be writing a lot more together.
